What are the most common nail shapes? There are 5 common nail shapes.
Square: The free edge is straight across. This shape is strong because of its full width at the free edge. This shape may cause injury to the skin because of its sharp corners.
Round: The free edge is round, comforting to the finger tip.
Oval: The free edge is oval. Most professionals choose this shape as it looks attractive.
Pointed Stiletto: The top of the free edge is narrow and pointed. This shape is suited to thin hands with narrow nail beds, however it is weak and can break easily.
Square-Oval: The shape is a combination of square and oval. The front edge of the free edge is straight across with the corners rounded off. This shape is strong and suited to those who work with their hands.
